What is different about generator work in Karen
-
Nearly every standby job in Karen is really a borehole job: the house load is modest but the submersible pump sets the kVA, and sizing on running load alone is the most common reason a Karen set trips at 2am when the tank calls for water.
-
Estate managers on Bogani East and Kerarapon commonly require the delivery vehicle and crew to be listed at the gate a day ahead, so a same-day swap of a failed set is a gate problem before it is an engineering one.
-
Electric gates, an electric fence energiser and a septic pump are the three loads Karen clients forget to declare, and all three are the ones they notice within an hour of a changeover that omitted them.
- Getting a set in
- Off Ngong Road and Langata Road through the Karen roundabout. Most estates here sit behind an estate gate that wants 24 hours notice before a delivery lorry, and the last stretch to many houses on Kisembe and Mukoma is murram that a loaded 3-tonne lorry will rut in the long rains.
- Typical load here
- Half-acre-and-up plots where the standby set has to carry the whole house plus a submersible borehole pump. The pump is what decides the sizing: its starting inrush can be six to eight times its running current, so a set chosen off the household total alone will stall every time the tank refills.
- Noise, and what it rules out
- Plots are large enough that the 35 dB night limit at the boundary is usually reachable with a standard canopy, which is why open-frame sets still get sold here. On the narrower Karen Centre and Marula Lane plots it is not.
- Supply and outages
- Long spur feeders off Karen and Hardy, with outages that tend to be few but long because a fault has to be traced down the spur.
What we do in Karen
- Generator Repair Diagnosis and repair of diesel and petrol generating sets across Nairobi, from a set that cranks but will not start to one that runs but produces no usable output.
- Generator Servicing & Maintenance Scheduled servicing for diesel and petrol sets, planned on running hours rather than the calendar, with a load test so the set is proved rather than assumed.
- Generator Installation Siting, mounting, exhaust, ventilation and changeover for new and replacement sets, designed around the NEMA boundary noise limit and the loads that genuinely need to stay on.

FAQ
▸Will a generator run my borehole pump in Karen?
Only if it was sized for the pump starting, not the pump running. A 1.5 kW submersible can demand six to eight times its running current for a second or two on start, and that spike is what decides the set. We ask for the pump plate rating before quoting anything in Karen.
▸Do I need a canopy on a half-acre plot?
Usually yes, but for the night limit rather than for your own comfort. NEMA allows 35 dB at a residential boundary at night; an open-frame set at 10 m is far above that, and Karen boundaries back onto other houses.
