Two decisions, in this order: what has to stay on when the power goes, and what the largest thing starting is. The second one sets the size, and almost everybody gets it from their electricity bill instead, which is how a set ends up browning out every time the borehole pump calls for water.
The price cliff nobody warns you about
Between 12 kVA and 20 kVA the price roughly quadruples. That is not a shortage of stock in between: it is the point where the market changes from imported budget-brand sets to genuine industrial plant with a dealer network and parts availability. If your load sits near that boundary it is worth sizing carefully, because crossing it is the single most expensive decision in a generator purchase.
