20kVA Generators

The entry point to industrial plant in Kenya, where the machine comes with a dealer network and parts availability, and where brand accounts for a 36 percent price spread.

Suits

  • Apartment blocks with lifts
  • Offices and clinics with an uptime requirement
  • Workshops with three-phase motor loads
  • Cold rooms and small food production

The first size that is real plant

At 20 kVA the Kenyan market changes character. Below it you are buying an imported machine that is inexpensive, adequate, and largely unsupported. At and above it you are buying Perkins or Cummins: engines with a dealer network, documented service intervals and parts availability measured in decades.

The price reflects that. A 20 kVA Cummins lists around KES 970,000 VAT inclusive. A 20 kVA Perkins lists around KES 1,320,000. A 12 kVA imported silent set lists around KES 250,000.

The 36 percent question

Two industrial engines, the same rating, a 36 percent difference. That is not a measurement error and it is not worth averaging into a single figure.

What it reflects is brand, dealer strength, and parts logistics. The practical way to choose is to ask what response time each dealer can give for your location and what parts they hold in Nairobi, because at this size the cost of a set standing idle waiting for a component dwarfs the purchase difference.

Standby versus prime

You will see the same machine listed two ways, as 22 kVA standby and 20 kVA prime. This matters. A standby rating assumes limited annual hours backing up a grid. A prime rating assumes the set carries load for extended periods.

If you are in an area where outages run for hours, or you are on the EPZ side where plant sometimes runs on generator for whole shifts, you are buying against the prime rating and should be quoted against it.

FAQ

Why does a 20kVA cost four times a 12kVA?

Because it is industrial plant rather than an imported budget set. A 12kVA silent diesel lists around KES 250,000; a 20kVA Cummins lists around KES 970,000 and a 20kVA Perkins around KES 1,320,000. You are buying an engine and alternator designed for sustained duty, a dealer network, and parts you can still obtain in a decade.

Cummins or Perkins at 20kVA?

The listed spread is about 36 percent, which is substantial. Both are genuine industrial engines with support in Kenya. The decision usually comes down to which dealer network is stronger for your location and what parts and service response you can actually get, rather than to the datasheets.

What is the difference between standby and prime rating?

The same machine is often listed as, for example, 22kVA standby and 20kVA prime. Standby is a limited-hours rating for backing up a grid; prime is for carrying load for extended periods. Running a standby-rated set as prime shortens its life considerably.
