The price structure nobody explains
Diesel generator pricing in Kenya is not a curve. It is two markets with a cliff between them.
Up to around 12 kVA you are buying imported budget-brand sets. A 6 kVA silent set with an automatic transfer switch lists around KES 165,000; a 10 kVA around KES 190,000 to 195,000; a 12 kVA around KES 250,000. These are inexpensive, widely available and adequate for a house or a small premises.
From about 20 kVA upward you are buying industrial plant. A 20 kVA Cummins lists around KES 970,000 and a 20 kVA Perkins around KES 1,320,000. That is roughly four times the 12 kVA price for less than double the output.
The gap is real and it is not a stock shortage. It is the point where the market changes from imported budget machines to plant with a dealer network, parts availability and a service proposition. If your load sits near that boundary, sizing carefully is the single most valuable thing you can do, because crossing it is the most expensive decision in the purchase.
Brand spread at the same rating
Note also that a 20 kVA Perkins and a 20 kVA Cummins differ by about 36% at the same rating. That is brand, dealer support and parts supply rather than a measurement error, which is why we quote it as a range rather than averaging it into a single number that would be wrong for both.
Where diesel is the right answer
Diesel earns its purchase premium through running cost, longevity and the ability to carry sustained load. A set that runs for hours during every outage, or that has to start a motor, or that must last a decade, is a diesel set. Below about 6 kVA, and for genuinely occasional use, petrol is usually the better economics.
Silent or open frame
An acoustic canopy is a cost, and whether you need one is decided by where the set sits rather than by preference. NEMA permits 50 dB by day and 35 dB at night at a residential boundary, with penalties to KES 350,000. On a generous plot in Ngong an open-frame set can sit inside that. In a Kilimani block with a three-metre boundary it cannot, and nor can a standard canopy on its own. In Industrial Area, where the zone allows 70 dB by day, paying for a residential canopy is money that would be better spent on the alternator.

▸Why is a 20kVA diesel generator four times the price of a 12kVA?
Because it is a different class of machine, not a bigger version of the same one. Up to about 12 to 15kVA the Kenyan market is imported budget-brand sets; from about 20kVA it is genuine industrial plant such as Perkins and Cummins with a dealer network and parts availability. The label says kVA in both cases and almost nothing else is comparable.
▸Diesel or petrol?
Diesel above about 6kVA and for anything that runs regularly: it costs more to buy, less to run, lasts far longer and handles sustained load. Petrol below that and for occasional use, where the lower purchase price dominates.
▸How do I size a diesel generator?
From the largest starting load, then the total running load. A submersible borehole pump or a compressor can draw six to eight times its running current for a second or two on start, and that spike decides the set. Sizing from your electricity bill produces a machine that browns out every time the pump calls.
