What a canopy is for
A canopy is not a comfort feature, it is a compliance component. The relevant standard is the measured sound level at your boundary, and the enforceable limits at a residential boundary are 50 dB during the day and 35 dB at night.
35 dB is quiet. It is roughly a library. A datasheet quoting 65 dB at seven metres is not describing a machine that meets it at a three-metre boundary, and manufacturers’ figures are measured in free field conditions that a plant room or a narrow yard does not reproduce.
Why the same set is legal in one place and not another
This is the single largest practical difference between areas in Nairobi.
On a Karen or Ngong plot the boundary can be forty metres from the set. Sound falls off with distance, and a standard canopy comfortably meets the night limit. On a Kilimani or Embakasi block the boundary is three metres away and there are households above you, so the same machine in the same canopy does not.
In Industrial Area the zone permits 70 dB by day and an open-frame set is the correct choice; buying a residential canopy there is wasted money better spent on the alternator or the control gear.
When a canopy is not enough
Where the measured level still exceeds the limit, the remaining options are building work rather than plant: attenuated intake and discharge louvres, a duct silencer on the exhaust, an acoustic enclosure around the plant space, and sometimes a different siting altogether. These belong in the quotation at the start, because discovering them after the set is delivered is expensive.
Vibration is a separate problem
Several complaints we attend are not about sound at all. A set bolted to a slab that is continuous with a shared wall transmits vibration through the structure, and the neighbour feels it rather than hears it. No canopy addresses that. Isolated anti-vibration mounts and a plinth separated from the building do.

▸How quiet is a silent generator really?
Quieter than open frame, and usually not quiet enough on its own for a tight urban plot at night. The number that matters is the measured level at your boundary, not the manufacturer's figure at seven metres in free field. On a three-metre boundary a standard canopy frequently still exceeds the 35 dB night limit, and attenuated intake and discharge louvres plus a duct silencer are needed on top of it.
▸Do I need a silent set on a large plot?
Often yes, but for the night limit rather than for your own comfort. Even on a half-acre plot the boundary backs onto a neighbour, and an open-frame set at ten metres is far above 35 dB.
▸What is the penalty for exceeding noise limits?
Under the NEMA noise regulations, fines run to KES 350,000 or imprisonment up to 18 months, enforced against whoever operates the machine. For a block that is the owner or the management company.
