What an inverter actually is

A battery inverter stores energy when the grid is on and converts it back to mains voltage when the grid is off. There is no engine, so there is no noise, no fuel, no exhaust and no starting delay: the transition is instant and most people do not notice it happened.

That makes it the right answer for the outage pattern most of Nairobi actually experiences, which is frequent and short rather than rare and long.

Where it cannot replace a generator

Three hard limits, and they are worth being blunt about because this is where disappointed purchases come from.

Capacity is finite. An inverter runs until the battery is empty. A generator runs until the fuel is empty, and fuel can be fetched.

Motor starting. A submersible borehole pump demands six to eight times its running current on start. Domestic inverter systems are not built to supply that, and if your water comes from a borehole this is decisive.

Heavy loads. Electric water heating, cookers and welding plant are out of scope for any sensibly sized domestic battery bank.

Where it is clearly better

Silence is not a small thing in Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Embakasi or any block where the boundary is three metres away and the NEMA night limit is 35 dB. An inverter has no noise limit to meet, needs no acoustic canopy, no exhaust routing and no NEMA assessment. In an apartment with no legal place to put a generator, the inverter is not a compromise, it is the only compliant option.

It also needs no servicing, no filters, no fuel that degrades, and no battery to crank an engine, which removes the entire class of failures that keeps standby generators from starting.

The combination most Nairobi homes should consider

An inverter sized for lights, networking and refrigeration, plus a generator sized for the pump and the long outages. The inverter handles the frequent interruptions silently and instantly. The generator stays for the events that justify starting it, and is started less often, which lengthens its life rather than shortening it.

Is an inverter better than a generator?

For different things. An inverter is silent, instant, needs no fuel and no maintenance, and is ideal for lights, routers, TVs and laptops through a few hours of outage. A generator carries far more load, runs as long as there is fuel, and can start motors. An inverter cannot start a submersible borehole pump, and it runs out when the battery does.

Can I have both?

Yes, and for many Nairobi homes it is the best answer. The inverter covers the frequent short outages silently and instantly, and the generator covers the rare long ones and the heavy loads. It also means the generator is not started for a fifteen-minute interruption, which is hard on it.

How long will an inverter run my house?

It is entirely a function of battery capacity against load, and the honest answer requires both numbers. Lights, a router and a TV on a modest battery bank is several hours. Add a fridge and it is fewer. Add water heating and it is minutes.
