Generator AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator)
The automatic voltage regulator is the cheapest part that produces the same symptom as the most expensive one, which is why it is tested rather than swapped on suspicion.

The cheap part that mimics the expensive one

reason is that AVR failure is common and its symptom is alarming: the engine runs
beautifully and nothing comes out.
The difficulty is that an alternator winding fault presents identically. One of those repairs is a modest part; the other is a major component or a rewind. So the first job is a test, not a purchase.
What we test before selling you anything
The regulator itself, the excitation supply reaching it, the rotating rectifier where the machine has one, and the alternator windings by insulation and resistance measurement. That sequence distinguishes a failed regulator from a failed alternator in a single visit and costs far less than guessing wrong once.
Getting the right part
The rating is not the identity. A 10 kVA set from one manufacturer and a 10 kVA set from another use different alternators with different excitation arrangements, and their regulators can look interchangeable while behaving nothing alike.
Send a photograph of the alternator plate and of the failed regulator, including its part number, and the right part can be identified. A description of the generator’s kVA cannot do it.
When the AVR is not the problem
Voltage that sags only when a large motor starts is not a regulator fault: it is a set too small for that starting load, and no regulator will fix it. Voltage that drifts high on lightly loaded phases of a three-phase set is an imbalance problem. Both get misdiagnosed as AVR failures and both waste the part.

The classic sign is an engine that runs perfectly with no usable output at the board, or voltage that hunts or sits high. But an alternator winding fault produces the same symptom, and an alternator costs many times an AVR, so it is worth proving which before buying either.

No, and this is the commonest wrong purchase in Kenyan generator parts. Externally identical regulators have different sensing and excitation arrangements. We need the part number from the failed unit or the alternator plate details. Fitting the wrong one gives unstable voltage and sometimes destroys the new regulator immediately.
